The National Museum and Galleries of Wales and St Fagans Please note that there are no more work experience opportunities available for the rest of the summer term. Work experience places will be available again in September. Please ensure that the booking procedure is followed as failure to do so this term has resulted in disappointments i.e. students being declined. The procedure is as follows: ALL work experience places MUST be booked through the Careers Wales database, no direct telephone requests from schools or parents will be honoured & this has lead to the employer withdrawing places in the past. All booking request letters for any museum placements MUST be accompanied by a completed application form, copies of which can be obtained from Careers Wales otherwise they will not be considered. Students must only be placed in departments relating to their interests specified on the application form. They should not be placed in any department just to get into the museum.

Schools and colleges should check that their students are equipped with appropriate personal protective euipment (such as safety boots) where this is required by the employer. Whilst employers are able to provide equipment such as hard hats and gloves they are not commonly able to provide safety boots. The requirements for each placement are included in details on the database. Students should not be allowed to go to placements requiring safety footwear unless you are certain that these are available to students and that they have been reminded to wear them.

Regarding the need for CRB checks on students placed in Cardiff LEA schools and nurseries we have been informed that this is up to the discretion of the head teacher offering the placement.
When booking places for students we therefore advise Coordinators to check whether or not the particular Cardiff LEA school/nursery concerned requires CRB checks.

Careers Wales will only approve placements where students are entered as ‘allocated’ in the on-line system. Careers Wales cannot take any responsibility for student placed directly by schools and colleges, even in cases where these placements are with database employers.
|
| 26 Aug 2004 |
From September 2004 employer names, telephone contacts and list of approved employers will be hidden from the student menu. Students can still search and view placement details and location but they will need to see their teacher/lecturer to book a place and obtain full employer details. This change has been made to prevent people taking details from the system and telephoning employers directly to request placements. This practice led to a number of employers withdrawing their offer of work experience last year. Please remember that all places on the system must be booked through school or college before students contact employers to confirm placements and arrange interviews.
